No significant difference and an unreadable result mean different things

Keep unresolved studies in view and understand why the share of positive papers is not a probability that a supplement will work.

A reported null comparison contains a result. An abstract without an interpretable comparison leaves a question unresolved.

Two statements that should not share a bucket

No statistically significant difference between groups reports a comparison. No comparison reported in the abstract describes missing information. Treating both as no evidence hides what the researchers actually tested.

A nonsignificant result does not establish equivalence or an effect of exactly zero. A small sample or a wide interval may leave important differences unresolved. The estimated effect and its uncertainty matter alongside the reported test result.

Which papers disappear from the denominator?

Imagine nine papers: four report positive results, two report no significant difference, and three cannot be interpreted from the available material. Highlighting four out of six makes the three unresolved papers disappear from the picture.

Counting papers is not pooling participant data or combining effect sizes. A small and a large study each occupy one row but may provide very different information. A result distribution helps organize reading; it is not an efficacy probability.

Four out of six is not your probability of benefit. Keep the three unresolved papers visible, then consider study sizes, participants, and outcomes separately.

Mixed results may answer different questions

One study might find a difference in time taken to fall asleep but not in total sleep time. Calling everything positive would extend a result beyond what was measured. Check whether it was the planned main outcome, one of several outcomes, or a finding limited to a subgroup.

Different populations and outcomes can also explain why papers point in different directions. Establish whether the studies address the same question before calling them contradictory.

What an unresolved label should preserve

A comparison may be missing, an ingredient's contribution may be inseparable, or the abstract may omit the needed result. An automated reading failure is a different limitation from a paper that never reported the result.

An unresolved paper is not necessarily a bad study or a negative finding. It means the current information does not support a direction for this question. Preserve the difference between few studies, conflicting findings, and information that cannot yet be interpreted.

  • Is a positive-paper ratio being mistaken for a personal probability?
